The Directorate of Health, Culture and Sport Affairs is a centre of coordination and application, which is in charge of social, cultural and health affairs for all those related to the university.
The main areas of activity of this department are as follows:
1. Management of all sorts of health services and establishing new health centres.
Some of the facilities provided by the Directorate of Health, Culture and Sport Affairs are as follows: HEALTHCARE SERVICESIn addition to the central medico-social unit located in Buca-Kaynaklar, the university owns 5 health offices located in the Bornova, Narlıdere, Alsancak and Buca campuses. These units and offices provide medical treatment facilities without any payment, except for a nominal fee of 30 YKR, which corresponds approximately to 15 pence or 20 cents. SEFERİHİSAR STUDENT TRAINING CAMPOur university owns a student camp located on the Aegean Sea coast near Seferihisar (approx. 40 minutes from the city centre), which has cappacity of 200 students. The camp is equipped with social and sanitary facilities available 24 hours a day.
ACCOMODATIONIn addition to the hostels owned and managed by the General Directorate of Higher Education Credit and Hostels Institution, the university possesses a hostel for female students in Buca, which has places for 552 students. Students may also wish to rent flats around Buca, Bornova and Narlidere. LIBRARYAs a vital resource for study and research, the University Central Library provides information and loan services to students and staff of the Buca – Dokuzçeşmeler Campus. In addition, every school and institute keeps separate and specific collections of books individually. The total number of libraries in the University is 14, occupying 7214 square meters with a capacity of 1100 readers. The libraries’ stock of 260,485 volumes and subscriptions to 1084 periodicals (726 foreign, 358 Turkish) meet the undergraduate and graduate course requirements. The Medical School Library is mainly used by students of the Health Science Institute, which is located on the same campus.
The Medical Faculty Library occupies 1150 square meters on two floors. The library collection includes a total number of 13,563 books, 1240 theses and 150 Turkish journals. It has subscription to 198 periodicals. For unsubscribed periodicals and unavailable books, photocopies of the articles can be brought to the readers by the interlibrary collaboration system. It also includes a CD library. The books are classified according to the system of the National Library of Medicine. The library uses an automation programme produced by the University. It has 15 computers, one printer and three photocopy machines for the use of the readers. During the academic year the library is open from 8:00 am to 23:00 pm Monday through Friday and from 9:00 am to 23:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. The students can eat in the school cafeteria with very low prices. The other places to eat sell fast food (hamburgers, cheeseburgers, many types of cold and hot sandwiches, potato chips, pizza), regular meals, dairy products, cakes, turkish döner with bread, tea, coffee, many cold drinks such as coke, ice tea, ayran, sprite and fruit juice. The students can have lunch in these places for 1 – 5 YTL (approx. 3-4 Euro).
